I think Amanda Seyfried is a wonderful actor

I think Amanda Seyfried is a wonderful actor, but there was too much eyes rolling up to heaven - the portrayal didn't seem very nuanced. There's a danger in my opinion of presenting someone like Ann Lee in a positive light. I kept thinking this is what results in cults (a person claiming to have answers and "visions"). The movie never engaged me emotionally and the highly choreographed dancing was absurd, right up to the Busby Berkeley overhead shots. Finally, WHY does Thomasin McKenzie keep taking nothing roles like this? It feels like a real waste of talent.

Like watching a car wreck that you can't

Like watching a car wreck that you can't turn away from. From a historical standpoint, it's a very interesting film... that is maddening to watch. And you're never sure if you're watching a musical, or a film about congregants who sing a LOT. And very repetitively at that. If it's the latter, then perhaps the historical Ann Lee didn't have the lovely, stage-trained voice of Amanda Seyfried. Just sayin'. If it is a musical, they honestly could've written better songs. "I never did believe that I could be truly saved until I gave myself fully to God" is a nice sentiment. But listening to 30 - 50 people sing/drone it over and over and over and over throughout an entire 10 minute scene will make you want to throw something at your screen! That, combined with the chanting, screaming, moaning, and huffing of a Shaker service is truly unbearable at times. Also, definitely not for the kids. Unless you want them getting the full "Health Class" education in a very dark, unpleasant way.

A compelling follow-up to "The Brutalist" is as much earnest though comparably inferior when the summoned spiritual core possesses this as one of the more unique forms for both period drama and musical upon historical contexts, thus becoming evocative with such haunting rawness in sorrowful resilience, powerfully and passionately led by Seyfried further solidifying her mesmerizing growth.
