Ha Ha, Not, But ...

Whoever called this a "comedy" sure has a different definition from mine. Whatever humor was like the kind of gentle anecdote you get at a funeral eulogy. Having said that, this is not a bad movie, something like the love child of Woody Allen and "When Harry Met Sally".The characterizations are believable and relatable; the acting is fine throughout; and the ending (which I won't spoil) is both appropriate and satisfying. I had not heard of the source book, so went into this film completely fresh, and while I didn't get those promised laughs, I think it was worth the watch.

Shy cartoonist Chester and his beautiful, minor celeb girlfriend Sonny are living together, having sexual difficulties, and decide to have an open relationship. She brings home a series of terrible boyfriends (one of them even being repeatedly violent), while he visits prostitutes. All the way through this film I just wanted to shout at the two protagonists "What the f@$? Are you thinking!?" Maybe because I'm older and apparently much happier than the characters, it was difficult to watch people being so dumb and self-destructive, when there was an obvious way out for both of them - being in a normal, loving relationship with each other. It's supposed to be based on a true story, so I feel sorry for the writers. The film's ending seems unlikely (but I guess true as well), and as long as they're all happy now who am I to judge.Definitely a slice of life and quite eye-opening, and isn't that why we watch the movies.

Not a comedy, but a drama about exploring sexual relationships...

Right, well the 2024 movie "Paying for It" was labeled as a comedy, but it was most definitely not a comedy. It was a drama, laced with some very, very, very lighthearted comedy elements at best. So I have to say that I was somewhat bewildered as I sat through director Sook-Yin Lee's 2024 movie, as I thought it was a comedy movie.Writers Sook-Yin Lee, Joanne Sarazen and Chester Brown put together a script that was character-driven and dialogue-driven, so there wasn't really a whole lot of anything happening, aside from the actors and actresses standing or sitting around delivering dialogue. Since there was little or no comedy to be found in the 84 minutes that the movie ran for, I have to say that this movie was somewhat of a test of wills for me to sit through.Since I was not familiar with the graphic novel by Chester Brown, then I honestly don't know how true the writers were to the source material. Nor has this movie spurred any interest in me going out and tracking down aforementioned graphic novel to read.I was actually not familiar with a single actress or actor on the cast list, which was something that definitely turned out in favor of the movie. The acting performances in "Paying for It" were fair.Hardly a movie that I would recommend for you to rush out and get to watch, unless your thing is movies with narratives that are driven solely by characters and dialogue. And this is without a doubt not a movie that will ever grace my screen a second time.I am sure that there is an audience out there for an odd movies such as this, I just happen not to be part of that particular target audience. My rating of director Sook-Yin Lee's 2024 movie "Paying for It" lands on a generous three out of ten stars.
