Plot summary

In a monastery set on the top of sandstone pillars young monk Theodoros and nun Urania find themselves physically drawn to one and other after devoting their lives to the strict rituals and practises of the monasteries. Below them the eternal cycle of farm-life provides a strong contrast to their lives and they are forced to choose between human desire and spiritual devotion

Nas planícies aquecidas da Grécia central, monastérios ortodoxos elevam-se acima de pilares de arenito, suspensos entre o céu e a terra. O jovem monge Theodoros e a freira Urania dedicaram suas vidas aos estritos rituais e costumes de sua comunidade. Um afeto que cresce entre eles coloca suas vidas monásticas em risco. Divididos entre a devoção espiritual e o desejo humano, eles devem decidir que caminho devem seguir.

This Greek film is directed by Spiros Stathoulopoulos and competed at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival in February 2012. Starring charming Theo Alexander and Tamila Koulieva, it takes us to the Byzantine monastery complex Metéora, in Thessaly, a series of structures built on natural sandstone pillars whose tops often disappear into the clouds. Of course, in setting like that cinematography has to be outstanding. That could be the reason, as well as the introduction of animation with "Byzantine" style within the film narrating us the story, for its nomination for a Golden Berlin Bear at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival. An unholy union takes place in the plains where their monasteries are suspended between heaven and earth. The plot was simple, the emotions were visible, the chemistry between the actors perfect, the only problem was that the enjoyment was short lived. A movie lasting 78 minutes where at least one third looks like a tourist postcard does not offer too much of development of characters, or analysing the relationships deeper. I still enjoyed it, because the good (work) is prevailing over the bad (work)...
