An effective and well-crafted social thriller, built on a solid screenplay despite a few narrative shortcuts and writing rough edges. It is particularly regrettable that the subplot involving drug dealers and trafficking is barely touched upon and so quickly brushed aside, as there was real potential to further explore the film’s social stakes. That said, the direction and editing serve the story well, making confident use of visual storytelling and cutting at just the right moments, shaping a contemplative rhythm while still conveying a sense of urgency. The actors are convincing and bring genuine soul to the family drama and the brother–sister relationship at the heart of the story. The fine cinematography is highly accomplished and effectively conveys the anxiety-inducing potential of certain situations—especially the tension of the underwater scenes, which alone make the film worth seeing on the big screen.
