The "Good" Thief

Great Climax, Uneven Journey

Crime 101 is a solid, well-mounted crime thriller that works in parts but never quite elevates itself into something memorable. The setup is strong - a disciplined lone thief and a persistent detective circling each other - and there are stretches where the writing feels sharp and engaging. The film looks polished, with slick cinematography and a controlled tone that suits the material. However, it becomes increasingly predictable as it progresses. The characters, while interesting on paper, aren't explored deeply enough to create real emotional or psychological impact. The middle portion especially drags, with pacing issues and repetitive beats that dilute the tension. That said, the film redeems itself with a gripping final 20 minutes. The climax is tense, well-executed, and finally delivers on the promise of the premise.Overall, Crime 101 is a decent watch - stylish and occasionally compelling, but ultimately held back by a sagging middle and underdeveloped characters. 6.5/10.

A Very Solid Crime Thriller

I'm a sucker for a good cops-and-robbers story, so Crime 101 was immediately on my radar. I was also a big fan of American Animals, so seeing Bart Layton in the director's chair made me even more curious. On top of that, the cast is absolutely stacked, which made it feel like all the ingredients were there for something special. Thankfully, the film delivers on most of that promise. While I don't quite think it reaches the level of fantastic, it is still a very good and engaging crime thriller that kept me invested from start to finish. The story follows Davis (Chris Hemsworth), a high-end thief who makes his living by being patient and strategic. Like most criminals, though, his careful routine starts to slip. He begins a relationship with Maya (Monica Barbaro) and takes a risky step by inserting himself into the life of Sharon (Halle Berry), all while trying to quietly exit the game. Meanwhile, Detective Lou (Mark Ruffalo) starts to notice patterns in Davis' work and becomes determined to bring him down. With a few twists along the way and another robber entering the mix, played by Barry Keoghan, the narrative always had something interesting happening and never lost my attention.Visually, this is a sleek and sharp film that feels very polished. The cinematography is stylish, the direction is confident, and the overall tone fits the story perfectly. I liked the characters, their motivations, and where the story ultimately goes. My biggest issue, however, is the pacing. At two hours and twenty minutes, the film feels longer than it needs to be. There are several scenes that could have been tightened or trimmed, and I truly believe that cutting it down to just under two hours would have made it an even stronger film. It's never boring, but it definitely lingers in places where it didn't have to.The performances are a major highlight across the board, with the cast bringing a lot of weight to the material. The score is subtle but effective, rising at just the right moments, and Layton's direction keeps the tension steady throughout. The editing is solid for the most part, though it could have been sharper in certain stretches to help the pacing. Overall, Crime 101 is a slick, well-acted crime thriller that I had a great time watching. It's a very good movie that I'd easily recommend to fans of the genre, even if it runs a bit longer than necessary.
